People employed by the baseball industry for the most part, do not take the statistics produced during Spring Training very seriously. As they look for other things, like if the player is experiencing with a new pitch or just getting a few swings in. Though, I would have to admit, if statistics were taken seriously Cha Seung Baek would not make the staff, Chad Huffman and Kyle Blanks would be on the major league roster. Baek, in my most humble opinion needs to impress the Padres Front Office and so far I haven’t seen anything impressive with Baek, other than an ERA that ranks up there with a few good companies with P/E ratios of 10+ on New York Stock Exchange. The case with Huffman and Blanks, both have done nothing but solidified there stance on becoming a member of the major league roster. The Padres could easily trade Giles, Kouzmanoff, Peavy, and Adrian Gonzalez to get a bundle of players in return. The fundamental question is, do the Padres really have the guts to make a bold move ?
If I were the Padres GM, this what I would try to do. Keep in mind, I am creating these scenario’s with no fundamental backing from other sources. I would try to pull off two trades before the team breaks from camp. Here are those trade proposals:
(1) I would send Kouzmanoff to Houston, for Astros pitching prospects Samuel Gervacio and Felipe Paulino.
(2) I would send Brian Giles to Oakland, for A’s pitching prospect Jeff Gray. Gray is a hard-throwing reliever who led all A’s minor leaguers with 15 saves in 2007.
With those two moves, I have solidified the bullpen with Gray and Gervacio, added a potential starter with Paulino after the all-star break. In addition, moving Headley to 3rd base, allows either Huffman or Blanks to play in left field and Scott Hairston or Wil Venable in right field.
Obviously, by the performance of the Padres pitching there should be no questions asked as what to do. With that being said, hereâs a tune by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King, titled âAsk Me No Questionsâ
